What to Do in a Dental Emergency (Yarrabilba Guide)

Nov 2025 FB Dental Team

Immediate Action Can Save Your Tooth

Dental accidents or severe tooth pain need quick action. In Yarrabilba, knowing first-aid steps can save a tooth. Common emergencies include a knocked-out tooth, a chipped/broken tooth, or sudden severe pain.

Knocked-Out Tooth

For a knocked-out permanent tooth, pick it up by the crown only, gently rinse any dirt under running water, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If it won't go in, store it in a container of milk or your saliva (not tap water). Then see an emergency dentist immediately, or go to a hospital if our clinic is closed – the sooner it's treated, the better the chance of saving the tooth. (Remember: baby teeth should not be replanted.)

Chipped or Broken Tooth

For a chipped or broken tooth, first rinse your mouth with warm water. Control any bleeding by gently biting on sterile gauze. Use a cold pack on your face to reduce swelling. Save any tooth fragments and bring them to the dentist. If there's a sharp edge, cover it temporarily with sugarless gum to protect your cheek. Avoid hard or sticky foods, and consider pain relief as needed.

Toothache or Infection

If you're experiencing a toothache or infection (throbbing pain, swelling, fever), rinse with warm salt water and use floss to dislodge any lodged food. A cold compress can relieve trauma-related pain, and over-the-counter painkillers (paracetamol or ibuprofen) can help until you see us. However, if the pain persists more than a couple of days, or if there's swelling spreading beyond the jaw or fever, contact the dental clinic immediately – it could be an abscess or serious infection.

Severe Cases - Call Emergency Services

In any severe case (difficulty breathing, large swelling, or heavy bleeding), call emergency services (000) right away. Otherwise, our Yarrabilba dentists are ready to help. FB Dental offers emergency appointments, so ring us at the first sign of trouble. Acting quickly can often save the tooth and prevent further complications.

Don't wait if you're experiencing a dental emergency. Contact FB Dental Yarrabilba immediately for urgent care.
