Why Dental X-Rays Are Essential
Dental X-rays allow our Yarrabilba dentists to see what's happening beneath the surface of your teeth and gums. At FB Dental, we use modern digital X-rays as an essential diagnostic tool for comprehensive dental care.
What X-Rays Reveal
X-rays detect cavities between teeth not visible during examination, bone loss from gum disease, infections at tooth roots or in jawbone, impacted or developing teeth, cysts, tumours, and other abnormalities. Early detection through X-rays often means simpler, less expensive treatment.
Digital X-Ray Safety
Modern digital X-rays use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. The radiation from a dental X-ray is minimal—comparable to a few hours of natural background radiation or a short plane flight. We follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), taking X-rays only when clinically necessary.
Types of Dental X-Rays
Bitewing X-rays show upper and lower back teeth, detecting decay between teeth and bone level changes. Periapical X-rays show the entire tooth from crown to root, useful for detecting abscesses and root problems. Panoramic X-rays capture the entire mouth in one image, used for assessing wisdom teeth, implant planning, and orthodontic assessment.
X-Ray Frequency Recommendations
How often you need X-rays depends on your individual risk factors. Patients with good oral health and low decay risk may need bitewings every two to three years. Those with higher risk may need annual X-rays. Children and adolescents typically require more frequent X-rays due to developing teeth and higher cavity risk.
