Why Flossing Matters
Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth where toothbrushes can't reach. At FB Dental Yarrabilba, we emphasise that flossing daily is essential for preventing gum disease and cavities between teeth. Yet only about 30% of Australians floss regularly.
Step-by-Step Flossing Technique
Start with about 45 centimetres of floss, winding most around your middle fingers and leaving 5-8 centimetres to work with. Hold the floss tightly between thumbs and forefingers. Gently guide the floss between teeth using a rubbing motion, never snapping it into gums.
The C-Shape Method
When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C-shape against one tooth. Slide it gently into the space between gum and tooth. Hold the floss firmly against the tooth and move it away from the gum with up-and-down motions. Repeat on the adjacent tooth before moving to the next gap. Use a clean section of floss for each tooth.
Flossing Alternatives
If traditional flossing is difficult, consider interdental brushes, water flossers, or floss picks. Interdental brushes work well for larger gaps between teeth. Water flossers are excellent for people with braces, bridges, or dexterity issues. Your Yarrabilba dentist can recommend the best option for your needs.
When to Floss
Floss at least once daily, ideally before brushing at night. This allows fluoride from toothpaste to reach between teeth. If your gums bleed when you first start flossing, don't stop. This usually indicates inflammation that will improve with regular flossing within one to two weeks.
