Don't Panic—Act Promptly
A filling or crown coming loose is alarming but usually manageable. At FB Dental Yarrabilba, we provide same-day emergency appointments for lost restorations. Meanwhile, here's how to protect your tooth until you can see us.
If Your Filling Falls Out
Keep the area clean by rinsing gently with warm salt water. Avoid chewing on that side. For temporary relief, dental cement (available from pharmacies) can cover the cavity. Clove oil applied with a cotton ball can reduce pain. Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods that may cause sensitivity.
If Your Crown Comes Off
Keep the crown safe—you may be able to have it re-cemented. Clean the crown gently with a toothbrush. If not painful, try placing it back on the tooth to protect the underlying structure (without forcing). Temporary dental cement from pharmacies can help it stay in place temporarily. Never use superglue.
Why Prompt Treatment Matters
The exposed tooth is vulnerable to decay, sensitivity, and further damage. Food impaction in the cavity can cause pain and infection. Sharp edges may irritate your tongue or cheek. Leaving a crown off too long allows the prepared tooth to shift, potentially requiring a new crown.
What Happens at Your Appointment
We'll assess whether the original restoration can be re-cemented or needs replacement. If decay caused the failure, we'll treat it before placing a new restoration. We'll determine why the filling or crown failed to help prevent recurrence.
